White sapote - pollination

    3 responses

My fabulous "Vista" white sapote is fruiting well in it's first season after being in the ground about three years. I have noticed that I am getting fruit set even though the nearby pollinator, "Lemon Gold" is not currently in flower. Will these fruit develop normally? I have some much larger fruit which set when they were both blooming at the same time.

I didn't think so either.. but it seems the first pollinated fruit have kick started further fruit development with no pollen source that I can ascertain. It will be interesting to see if they have any seeds, assuming they develop to maturity.

Is thinning the crop advised with white sapote? Some clusters on my vista comprise thirteen or fourteen developing fruit and I can't imagine them all reaching full size
