I am trying to find a Wilson plum. I think it is also known by the name Gympie plum(not 100% sure). This variety seems to crop extremely well where I live. Any help would be much appreciated. cheers Ange

Ange, You may have a problem with you Plum as I think most of the varieties are now for commercial growers and the export market. Another nice plum if you can get it, is the Wickson. I will keep my eyes open while out and about.

Thanks Stella. I really would love a wilson plum as the flavour is great and the FF dont seem to sting it. I may be able to get a cutting but have no idea about grafting and root stock etc. and haven't been able to get help from anyone local. I will look out for a Wickson plum. I haven't seen one at any of the nurseries here but once spring stock arrives I may have some luck.

cheers Ange

Dear Plum Growers,
Could someone please ID this Plum tree for me. The tree is covered in snow white blossom each year but fails to produce fruit! My guess it probably needs a POLLINATOR.I think a certain variety needs the right type of variety for fruiting success.

Hi Ange,
We have 7 wilson plum trees on land out of sydney. They are about 16yrs old, and the fruit come ripe in mid November.
The trees came from a nursery at Medowie, on the outskirts of Newcastle.
They are very tasty and make good plum jam
Hope that helps you
Joan

I have been looking for sometime for a Wilsons plum as we grew up with a tree. Did you manage to track one down? I found one on trading post but it was $45 in Sydney and yes, a santa rosa is good for pollination.

I have access to cuttings in winter when it gets pruned if that's any good. And yes it is a very prolific fruiter, a little bland but still OK. No need to graft onto anything, just shove the cutting in the ground.

Can't help you there Phil. The tree I will be getting these cuttings off was itself a cutting. You couldn't eat all the fruit off this tree, fairdinkum, and it's only about 2m tall.

Not sure if you're still after the Wilson Plum. In case you are, they are listed as available for pre-order through www.theplantshop.com.au for shipment in June 2014 at $35 plus postage. :)
