Ashley1 starts with ... Hi, I have a Wurtz that I planted 4 years ago and the poor thing has struggled for every day of its existence. I'm concerned that the Wurtz part has died and the rootstock is now all that remains. In the photo you can see the vertical stem with two branches off the left hand side. The vertical stem is dead and the last leaves fell off a month ago.The two side branches are alive and producing new growth. I think these two branches are above the graft, assuming that link/knuckle is the graft site. I'd appreciate any advice, and whether its too close to call. I really want a Wurtz!

TimJoh says... I've had two Wurtzs, one in Perth, the other near Dunsborough in WA. Both only ever produced crops of 2 or 3 fruit to the age of 7-8 years. At Dunsborough I have a Hass, Lamb Hass and a Bacon. The Hass was bountiful for several years but has dropped off over 3 years to 6-7 in Jan 2023. The Lamb-Hass is in its 4th year of consistant production of 15-25 fruit and the Bacon has its first fruit this year. Everyone I talk to who has planted Wurtz complains about the lack of fruit despite copius flowering. Lamb might be the way to go if you are after after a smaller tree otherwise just prune. | About the Author TimJoh MOUNT LAWLEY,6050,WA 11th January 2023 8:08pm #UserID: 25023 Posts: 8 View All TimJoh's Edible Fruit Trees |
