Young Avocado Dropping leaves

    5 responses

Hi, my young Bacon Avocado has recently starting dropping all of its leaves and is not looking good. It has many flowers but has over the past week shed most of its leaves. I'm in Adeleide and I have been bringing it inside each night over winter. Its in a 20 cm pot and was doing fine up until the past week or few weeks. Any ideas? Thanks

Hi j.grey,
It's normal when Avocado has flowers (early spring) all existing leaves will drop and replacing with the young buds come out soon. No needs to worry. Cheers

Hi David, oh that is good news. Just so worrying these early years for them. Do you think it's too early in Adelaide to pot them up or they should be okay now?

Hi j.grey,

As you know Avocado does not like the clay or wet feet but there are a few hints below hope will help you make up decision either grow it in the pot or put it in ground:

2. soil should mix with compost with PH between 5.5 to 6.5
3. for young tree it needs to under 50% shade cover for first few years until all trunk/stems got leave cover to protect from sun burn
3. If in pot go to fabric pot around 50l and increase to 200l after 2 years. 4. The fabric pot to ensure root grow healthy and doesn't have root rot issue that has happened with large size plastic pot unless you live in WA where the weather is much warmer. cheers

I think there is a issue with first point in writing format so I just re-send

1. If it grows in the ground it needs to grow on the big mound 1000mm by 1000mm by 500mm high to avoid wet feet and clay under the top soil.
