About My Edible Backyard

Why Kazj Love's Edible Plants

Hi we live in Oak Flats which is in the Shellharbour region of NSW. We grow organically. We have mixture of ornamental, fruit trees and vegie garden though I want to increase the amount of fruit trees. Our problem here is fruit fly. It affects so many types of fruit that would otherwise grow brilliantly. Our suburban backyard is about 700 square meters and is North facing. Not sure about our annual rainfall but we tend to have wetter humid summers and dryer winters. Our soil is fairly light loam it has been continually improved over the last 10 years with compost and mulch.

Grows well. Prolific fruiter. Tarter than Navel and a later cropper. Good for juicing.

Affected a lot by scale. Looks pretty but has extremely tart fruit. I prefer other varieties like Nagami to eat. I think I will pull it out and try another type.

Unfortunatley I don't know what type this is but it grows well in a sheltered posiiton. Is easily damaged by wind in August September. It took about three years to start fruiting but now we get about a bucket full of nuts each year and it is largley left to fend for itself. No extra watering and only fertilised by

Not sure what type this is but I have moved it three times and its still alive but not thriving. It hasn't grown much but had a few crab apples this year. It does need a bi more TLC from me though to truly get a good picture of how successful it will be.

Growing well in a shady spot. Lots of fruit but it will have to be netted as the birds love it.
