Coffee - K7 (Seedling) 10/10

Rwan1's Edible Fruits
Update: 467 days 20hrs

Comments: -

I just love coffee, So why not grow it?

Suprisingly not too difficult to grow in Victoria. Keep them in large pots so you can move them out of the cold. Keep the soil moist. What I usually do with many of my plants, is just wet the soil occasionally, but not actually give them a proper drink - just for the moisture when it looks like it's drying out. I think there is a difference between keeping plants hydrated and watering them (If that makes sense..).

When I first received these seedlings from Daley's, I positioned them in spot with lots of warm sun. Now that they have established themselves a little more, I have found that too much Central Victorian sun will just burn and dry out the leaves. When positioned in the sun for too long, the whole tree goes droopy. So now they only get morning sun and spend the rest of the day in the shade. This seems to work o.k... At night if the temperature drops, I bring them inside into a warm room.

I thought that maybe spraying the leaves would help, but this seems to make the leave grow oddly. It also can rot the leaves, so don't get water on the leaves!

The first pots that I put the trees in actually ended being too small. This stunted the growth. After trasplanting them to larger pots, they're growth has increased remarkably. I am now getting beautiful, large glossy green leaves.

I'm sure the Coffee Trees don't mind the occasional Samba music that gets played around the place too!!!

I hope that I've helped anyone.

Yes I'm a huge fan of coffee trees and have made a few cups of coffee using my own beans. I am a huge novice but very much enjoy the understanding I get from doing it by myself. Even though I have quite a few plants I don't think I will be able to support my coffee addiction from them.

Dwarf Coffee - Catui (Seedling) 10/10

Ahimsa Cottage's Edible Fruits
Update: 1152 days 16hrs

Comments: -

I hope to use the beans to make our own coffee eventually. I initially planted these trees at the back of our property which had a lot of clay and only managed to water them once a month and as a result their growth was slow. I decided to transplant them to along side the house improve the soil by adding peat moss and lots of mulch and where i could regularly water them. They have increased in size x5 in the last 6 months.

In April this year the tree began to fruit bright red coffee cherries, i picked these squeezed the green beans and soaked them in water for 2 days. i poped these beans into a mesh bag rubbed them to remove the membrane.  Then put  the beans onto paper kitchen towel sitting on a baking rack. Over the period of a couple of days the beans dry out, cracks form at the top so that the white parchment starts to spilt. The  parchment layer can be picked off to reveal the green bean. I have stock piling  these green bean til i  have enough 500 grams to trial roasting with pop corn machine. i will attach images.

This was so slow to get started. Out of 10 seeds I only got 2 sprout and out of that I only had 1 survive. Seems to be pretty easy to keep alive now it has true leaves. Can't wait to compare it against my Arabica's for flavour and growing characteristics.
