About My Edible Backyard

Why Henry Love's Edible Plants

My soil composition is made up of swampland with approx two metres of clay on top.  To put a plant in the ground, I have to painfully dig a hole one metre wide x one metre deep, throw in 5 kg of dolomite clay breaker and water in weekly until there is no water stagnation. We have frosts every winter, hence the requirement for a time consuming erection of a frost protection system. The success of my fruit trees is attributed to the laborious hole preparation (mind you, it takes seven bags of garden mix to fill one of these holes), dedicated watering twice a week without fail (including spraying the foliage with a jet stream of water while watering to get rid of ants, pests, etc.), fertilising with cow manure every two to three months alternating with citrus & fruit fertiliser, and weekly visual inspections for pests.

Frost Protection System 10/10

Henry's Edible Fruits
Update: 4156 days 20hrs

Comments: -

Time consuming but well worth the trouble.

The first few years of growing fruit trees some 10 years ago were disasterous as all my trees died after winter, not knowing why or how. I found out the frost was the culprit, so from the picture, you can see that I have been meticulous and have not lost any trees thereafter.

I use gladwrap for the upper sections (hail protection) and enclose the tree right around with frost protection cloth.

August 2009:  Dismantled at the end of the month (just in time) the day before the arrival of very strong winds.

September 2009 to March 2010:  No need for frost shields.

May 2012:  Erected frost shields only to Longan, mangoes, avocado and hawaiian guava trees.

Pollination: No

Pest Control:

Planted four years ago and still not fruiting. This pic was taken in winter;  will look much better during summer.  Purchased from Daleys.

August 2009:  No growth activity.  Pruned the tree.

September 2009:  No growth activity recorded.  Applied sulphate of potash and watered in.  Lost all its leaves, and tiny leaf buds are beginning to appear.

October 2009:  Leaves have sprouted all over and looking healthy.

November 2009:  Flowers have appeared and we have tried hand pollination, with a very small soft brush to collect pollen from male, then transferring onto female.  So far, no signs of activity.

December 2009 to February 2010:  Lots of new leaves but I have decided to take it out due to the required hand pollination which has yet to bear fruit over the past few years.  May put an R2E2 in its place.

Very healthy but have not fruited yet.  Purchased from Daleys.

August 2009:  Some flowering activity recorded

September 2009:  Some growth recorded.  Also observed tips of leaves becoming burnt / brown.  Will stop cow manure fertilising and replace with fruit fertiliser.  Will also water tree from rain water tank as salinity in town water may be suspect.  All brown edged leaves are snipped off.

September 08th, 2009:  Disaster!  Found one third of my tree on the ground; the possible work of cockatoos.  Pruned and hope for the best.  Applied sulphate of potash and watered in.  Only rain water is used for this mango tree.  Leaves still look normal.

October 2009:  Continued with watering with rain water.  Leaves look normal.  No browning observed.

November 2009:  Looking healthy and some growth recorded.

December 2009 to March 2010:  Noticeably much bigger with lots of growth recorded.  Recommenced watering with town water.  No more leaves turning brown since.
