Grape - Maroo SeedlessBJ's Edible FruitsUpdate: 137 days 14hrs Comments: - This plant is designed to screen the fence (between my orange and lemon) and hopefully provide me with some tasty table grapes. It is supported by some special purpose wires spaced about 40cm apart (against the fence). When it was first planted (early 2010) it was just a stick, but it is already covering the fence quicker than I had hoped. It is quite a bushy plant and I imagine I'll need to give it a decent prune to ensure good shape for years to come. There are even baby grapes on it already (October 2010)! In Jan 2011 the grape started wilting so I've removed the baby bunches and pruned the branches that are not where I want. It has since re-shoot and I imagine I'll need to prune again in autumn 2011-2012 has been a bad year for grapes - a late rain split the entire crop and there seems to be a 'disease' attacking the plant (leaves go yellow and fall off). But the plant is growing very fast. A second flowering resulted in a few more bunches that were split by rains just after Christmas! grape - thomuscatBJ's Edible FruitsUpdate: 137 days 14hrs Comments: - The thomuscat is supposed to be a white, seedless grape which is a cross between a sultana and white muscat, but with a strong muscat flavour (yummy ... I hope). It is supposed to mature early to mid-season. I planted it to screen the fence between my lime and orange. It appears to be more interested in growing up rather than out (which is fine). It was just a little stick when I planted it in early 2010. It is planted so that it is near a limestone retaining wall - which seems to keep it happy despite my attempts to acidify the soil in the bed (as there is a lime tree about 1.5 metres from the grape). the 2011-2012 crop was split by a late rain. The plant otherwise seems very happy and growing like a weed Planted: 2012 Height 1.5 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Water Given in: Spring Pollination: Self Pollination Pest Control: Not required at this time Was this review helpful? Grapefruit - Thompson Pink (Grafted)EalaBann's Edible FruitsUpdate: 281 days 2hrs Comments: - This is a sport of the common Marsh grapefruit variety, differentiated from its parent by its pinkish coloured flesh and seedlessness. Apparently the pink colour only develops under ideal growing conditions and I am not sure that it will receive enough heat in our garden. The taste is similar to Marsh. This tree is part of our citrus hedge - a row of citrus trees planted along a north-west facing boundary fence at 1m spacing. The plan is for the trees to grow into an effective hedge that will be kept pruned to about 2m high. We prepared the planting area for the citrus hedge by incorporating "fruit & veg" soil mix into our existing sandy soil. Mushroom compost was worked into the bottom of the planting hole which was then backfilled with more "fruit and veg" mix. The area was lightly mulched with mushroom compost, leaving the area about 8cm around the trunk clear. Passionfruit - Grafted Black Brad's Edible FruitsUpdate: 617 days 22hrs Comments: - Nelly Kelly label from Tass1 in small pot in Dec 09. Intended to shade the metal shed, via training to a new 1.8m high picket and wire trellis. Put in ground Dec 23 09. Sandy soil, added clay (bentonite from kitty litter, zeolite, spongelite and cow manure. Within 2 weeks smal rootstock growth grew as much as the original nelly kelly. Cut off when planted out. Grafted variety then grew extremely quickly when gripped a bamboo stake, climbing that inside 2 weeks. Pinched out top growth above top wire Jan 24 2010, need it to split into 2 branches as only one leader grew. Cut back to wire after growth commenced at and slightly below desired height. Some yellow spotting of leaves, hopefully sucking pest rather than virus. Reached Across the middle of top wire May 2010. Previous leader and branch to the right stopped growing (for now?). Across all of the top September 2010. Hoping for branching falling down and then flowers and fruit - I've tried small cuts a couple buds, but not seen them shoot yet. Might be another year for fruit, but I won't be in this house to see them. A bit worried about rootstock shoots that I've needed to pull up. Hope this stops and doesn't happen the other side of the neighbours fence Planted: 2009 Height 175 Centimetres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Medium Sun SpringWhen I Fertilise: Spring Was this review helpful? Passionfruit - Black (Grafted) 10/10 Karena's Edible FruitsUpdate: 646 days 17hrs Comments: - it tastes yum and I somehow managed to put it in 'just the right spot'. After I planted it it was struggling, but then I had a baby and started chucking his bathwater on there every day - about 9ltrs, and it took off - it is growing like crazy with minimal attention, now! I only water it on the odd occasion if it hasn't rained. Fruiting Months January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December Planted: 2008 Height 2 metres Growing: In the Ground Fruit Harvest: 100 Fruit Per Year Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Water Given in: Spring When I Fertilise: When Fruiting Organic Status:Organic Question: I discovered thattoo much nitrogen makes the plant drop immature fruit (I tipped the last of the 'poo tea' on it and it wasn't happy). What is a good mix of fertiliser, because it is a 'gross feeder', isn't it....? Was this review helpful? Grape - ruby seedless (Cutting) Mish's Edible FruitsUpdate: 860 days 23hrs Comments: - Planted on the 18th November this year, in a pot next to my pergola. Hoping that it will grow up the side and at least cover some of the top, as I have no cover because they keep getting torn off by the wind. Planted: 2009 Height 50 Centimetres Growing: In a Pot Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Spring Pollination: Self Pollination Was this review helpful? Yes | No | Report CommentsDiana says... [858 days 22hrs ago]Hi Mish, I love your pergola. Grapes are excellent for growing over a pergola, as they have dense, large leaves in summer and they don't tend to drop the leaves during the growing season, also they live a long time. It feels about 5 degrees cooler when I walk under my grape from another part of the garden. Diana.Brad says... [857 days 22hrs ago] If you want it to get up on the pergola, consider how you might encourage it to get there. e.g. how many stalks / branches do you need? I'd prune any you don't. e.g. maybe keep 3 or 4 only , 1 or 2 to go up, 1 left, 1 right. When they are in place you can tip prune to get branching. A framework you designed should make later pruning for fruit easier. Alternatively if you want it to spread through the wire, you could spread out the branches on it and tip prune often.* You need your own My Edibles Page to contribute Quick & Easy |
