This was the first Australian native food plant to be grown by non-indigenous Australians as a commercial crop. Seedlings from the original plantation near Alstonville were used as rootstock for grafted modern varieties well into the 20th Century. Since the clearing of the Big Scrub the genetic diversity of this valuable nut species has been reduced significantly. Very hardy and easily grown along most of Australia's east coast and even down into Victoria.

Excellent quality large fruit. Very low chill requirements and self-pollinating. A tough and vigorous bush. It has grown well in both sandy soils and heavier loams. The fruit has a wet scar, and is likely to become soft during very hot weather, meaning that it needs to be harvested frequently to overcome this.

Few drought resistant shrubs can rival the color of 'Burgundy Queen.' Everything about it is majestic and burgundy. Its fully double flowers are intense dark burgundy and profuse, and the fine foliage of this large shrub is also burgundy flushed. It originates from New Zealand where it grows in a wide range of areas from peaty bogs to coastal and mountain regions. It is surprisingly adaptable, especially to arid sites and soils.
