Widespread native, very attractive bushy shrub with dark green leaves and large pink to mauve flowers over many months. Also produces sweet, edible blue-black berries. Its scientific name Melastoma, means black (mela) tongue (stoma). Often confused with the exotic tibouchina. Very hardy.
