Compact and bushy, perfect for pots with round fruit flattened on the bottom. Look similar to a small apple. Pick when the whole fruit (or at least 80%) has just turned brownish red. Texture is crisp and light we consider it an excellent fresh or dried variety. Fruit size 35-45mm. Developed at the Chico institute in California, this is an early fruiting variety. A universal pollinator. Thin shelled nuts harvested late Feb/March Used fresh, and for roasting and cooking, Hazelnuts are very high in protein. Semi erect growing tree to approx 4 5m. Prefers temperate climates.All hazelnuts are self-sterile, requiring pollination from a genetically compatible partner. Pollen release timing and genetic makeup both contribute to variety selection, and commercial orchards often select 3-4 "pollinator" varieties to plant amidst their main harvest cultivar. Hazelnuts are often planted in close spacings as they are wind pollinated.

Cherry - Minnie Royal

Minnie Royal cherry is a low chill producer of fruit with stand out flavour. It is a medium to large sized, red cherry with a firm texture. The tree is very productive and has been known to set heavy crops in southern California. Chill hours can be as low as 200 hours and does depend on micro climate. Fruiting can be as early as November. Minnie Royal requires a pollinator which has traditionally been the older Royal Lee variety but flowering times of these 2 can be mismatched in warmer areas and an intermediary is helpful. The newer, self pollinating Royal Crimson blooming can bridge between these two. Bees are the main pollinating insects, so plant flowering herbs to attract them to your garden. Other stonefruit may also provide pollination services. Plant within 5m of each other for best results. Hand pollination could be helpful in years where flowering times are mismatched.

Avocado - Hass (A)

Most popular variety due to both its superior taste and excellent keeping qualities. Medium sized, pear-shaped fruit has an excellent creamy, flesh. The leathery rough dark-purple skin turns to black when ripe. H Aug-Dec. Hass is an A type variety and for good fruit set a B type variety is needed for cross pollination. Suggested varieties to grow alongside a Hass are Shepard, Sharwill, Fuerte, Bacon (if you're in a cooler climate)and Linda. Happy fresh avocado smashing.
