A highly ornamental tree that bears small red berries within its first year. Blossoming and producing all year round, the flowers are white and followed by small red fruit that is sweet with the taste of caramel. The trees are exceptionally attractive with long spreading branches that often droop down to the ground and soft weeping foliage. Trees are very fast growing and drought hardy once established. They can grow 5-10m in ideal conditions but respond well to being cut back so it is possible to keep them smaller than this making it easier to browse on the tempting little fruits. Panama berries will happily grow and fruit in large containers provided they have a good quality mix and a healthy layer of organic mulch to hold the moisture in. It is the ideal backyard tree if you have children as it is a lovely little shade tree as well as producing tempting little sweet treats. Perfect for use in a mixed screen or bush food garden the orange berry is also a host plant for the swallow tailed butterfly when the plant is young. Its growth rate is rapid and can handle almost any growing conditions and soil types and still look spectacular. Also known as Slender Weaver Bamboo it has dense evergreen foliage that can be left low to the ground or pruned away to show of its many culms. Gracilis is a non-invasive tight clumper that can easily grow in a narrow boxed garden bed. The fresh new shoots are edible. Culms can be split in long lengths, are strong and thin walled making them ideal for use in handcrafts such as basket weaving, furniture making, and musical instruments to name a few. To ensure the safe consumption of bamboo shoots, it's important to boil them before use. This process helps to remove the cyanogenic glycosides produced by the plant as a defence against herbivores. It's advisable to boil for at least 20mins and change the water once or twice during boiling to ensure all toxins are eliminated
