Hello all.
My name is Byron and i am the nursery manager at the Permaculture Research Institute in The Channon, Nth NSW.
Wanting to say hello and put the word out looking for anyone with EDIBLE AERIAL YAMS or any EDIBLE YAM species at all. I am endevouring to expand our Perennial Staple food collection and would love any help in this department.

We have various specimens of all sorts of things and would be happy to do trade offs.

Are you looking for commercial suppliers of interesting yams, or just swaps with home growers? I have an infestation of wing yams / African yams (and a few other things). I know where to buy aerial potato.

Hi Byron,
there are(or there were back in the 90's) some aerial yams (D.bulbifera)growing wild along the side of the road the other side of Dunoon (if I remember corectly).
aerial yams can go a bit feral and really aren't much good as a food imo.

better to go with D.alata varieties.
there are a few different ones available in Aust.
I've grown them up to around 10-15kg in a season.

plant them in a sunny spot, but where the vines can run up some tall trees, with the aid of a few untrimmed (brances left on) bamboo culms.
prepare soil with lots (i mean wheelbarrows full) of leaflitter that can break down over the growing season.

other good starchy perennial crops are cassava, cocoyam (Xanthosoma spp.) taro, sweet potato.

Hi, while we are on this subject...I have an aerial potato plant[tuber] which last year produced not much, then it died down and now it is up again to about 60cm, can I take cuttings to get new plants or do I have to wait for a fruit?

I have looked into it and it seems that tubers are allowed to be sent between Qld and NSW, so I can send you some wing yams. Where should I send them?
