Olive- Swan Hill (Cutting)

Speedy's Edible Fruits
Update: 4226 days 21hrs

Comments: -

'Swan Hill' is a non-fruiting cv. found here in Swan Hill, Vic.
material was taken to the USA in the 1962
by Dr Hudson Hartmann PhD. and found to produce no pollen or fruit.
It is now very widely planted in many municipalities across USA as a low allergenic, non-messy tree for amenity planting.

There is a nursery in Arizona that holds the sole rights to propagation of this cultivar despite this it remains a relatively unknown tree in Australia.

I grow it as a curiosity and because the tree originated from this district.

Pitaya - Cereus repandus (Cutting) 6/10

Speedy's Edible Fruits
Update: 4603 days 19hrs

Comments: -

The fruits are simmilar to Hylocereus in that the fruits are spineless ( but no scales like Hylocereus) and the  flesh separates easily from the thick skin.

the flesh has a white cristaline appearance with numerous small black seeds embedded in it.

the fruits will split from the flower end of the fruit when ripe to reveal the seedy flesh.

The flavour varies from plant to plant and some are slightly sweet, some less so, some have a slight sub-acid element to them.

they dont have much aroma, some may say it's insipid, but I like them.

The plants seem to handle frost ok. My plants have had it  down to -3degC here and I'm confident that they may take lower temps).

The plants produce very few fruits unles grown with another of the species.

There is room for improvement  with taste of fruits, and there would be plenty of opportunity to select superior plants as seed are produced in great quantity, plants are easy to grow and will do so on minimum irrigation

I have cuttings from several sources and seedings that have flowered and fruited after 4-5yrs from seed.

Speedy says... [4554 days 22hrs ago]
Bertybeetle, I've just pruned trees to train their shape. I think they're in their third season now and I've cut off all branches below 2.5 metres so i can walk under them. I just feed with compost , animal manures and woodchip mulch
