Jim P starts with ... I planted this about 12 months ago in a raised garden box I built on the western side of our house. We live in northern NSW, with plenty of sun and good rainfall. On planting, the raised box was filled with a mix of soil from the local landscape suppliers, with potting mix and dynamic lifter pellets. Initially it seemed to do ok, and quickly shot up a central fruiting stem, which I read you should prune, leaving three main branches. I did this last summer, and ever since the tree has hardly grown. It's currently about 80cm tall. I recently mulched with straw and fertilised with cow manure, and we've had 2 weeks of good rainfall. The plant just looks limp and unhappy. When new shoots appear, the leaves break off easily. Is there something obvious I'm missing in terms of nutrients or growing conditions? Any advice much appreciated. Thanks :) Jim

Markmelb says... Dont feed hardly at all except some liquid powerfeed - Mangos dont need much at all when young - I would trim branch on left to lower group of leaves and others similar so branches go more vertical (maybe a Dwarf Mango than Semi Dwarf would more suit that spot?) also some shade on hot days -Centre branches look a bit gnarly sun damaged? Paint exposed areas with 50% white interior water based paint? | About the Author Markmelb MOUNT WAVERLEY,3149,VIC 26th October 2017 8:11am #UserID: 7785 Posts: 1192 View All Markmelb's Edible Fruit Trees |

Jim P says... Thanks for your responses Markmelb and echinopora. Interesting to know it's a slow grower. I've taken both your advice and put some shade cloth over it, as the afternoon sun starts to get a bit fierce about this time of year. A few leaves have started to brown and dry in the last few days of warm weather, so I think you're onto something there. Mark - I pruned back to the next node...hopefully that might encourage it to put out some new growth. As for the dwarf vs semi dwarf, I'm hoping it will grow to 4m or so to fill that space. I jackhammered a 1.3 x 1.2m hole in the cement, worked the soil underneath and built the raised box on top so the roots can go deep. Is there a danger of over watering with good intentions?
