Debbie starts with ... I am just wondering whether anyone has had any success growing and getting a significant fruit crop from the Sheppard and Feurte avocado variety in the Brisbane/Ipswich area? We live near Ipswich which is slightly cooler than Brisbane, and am wondering whether these warm climate loving avocadoes will fruit alright in our area. We need a (B) type avocado for pollination reasons! We could always buy a Bacon avocado as a (B) type avocado (likes cold climate) but it doesn't apparently taste anywhere near as nice as a Fuerte or a Sheppard (so I have been told anyway). | About the Author Debbie2 Brisbane/Ipswich area 25th June 2007 2:25pm #UserID: 111 Posts: 1 View All Debbie2's Edible Fruit Trees |

John says... I have a Fuerte and another avocado close by. Both flower very well, the fuerte has always a very good crop with excellant fruit quality. The other may have one or two fruit per season. So I assume the other is a type A but not suitable for fruiting in the area. Incidently both are seedlings, the grafted trees that were close by were very inferior and prone to disease. My suggestion, if you have the space, is to plant many close together and remove what is not to your liking. I have always found seedlings always give the best fruit, have greater variation. At Goodna, the trees need to be well fertilized with organic matter and I find watering is not a major issue. Overwatering may contibute to disease problems. | About the Author John6 Goodna 22nd July 2007 10:15am #UserID: 169 Posts: 1 View All John6's Edible Fruit Trees |
