I was wondering whether dwarf avocados would be suitable to grow in Melbourne, next to a fence which gets the afternoon sun?

Hi Teresa,

Bacon is a perfect variety for Melbourne. Avocadoes are OK with a bit of shade, especially when young (below fence line). They just need drainage.

Thanks,

Diana.

I have a Bacon but I wanted to replace 2 photinias which are against the fence and I wanted dwarf ones.

Hi teresa, bacon isn't actually very productive in southern victoria unless you are in the inner warmer suburbs. For me its effectively only good as a pollinator as I don't have the warmth for it to set much fruit.

Youll have huge success with both Hass and Reed, they aren't as tall as Bacon but aren't dwarf. None if the dwarfs are worth growing imho. Most Victorian nursery's are stocking, hass, reed, bacon and wurtz these days. Most staff seem to know hass and reed are the winners now, which is good. The bacon theory started because it was the first variety Glowinski tried and he wrote about it but really it wasn't ideal. It is very cold tolerate but as Melbourne and most of Southern Vic is basically frost free its not any problem to grow the non mexican ones that grow best in cooler but frost free areas like hass and reed.

Thanks Diana and Jason4 for your info/suggestions about an avocado tree. I'll probably go for a Reed or Hass to replace my 2 photinias.
