Babaco Fruit Drop - Reason? (forum)

Justin starts with ...
I have a babaco tree which is about 3 years old. It has had quite a lot of fruit on it, but only one or two managed to get ripe over the previous summer. Most of them have remained on the tree through winter, but in the last few weeks they are starting to drop off while still fully green. Unlike the ripe ones which drop off without the stalk attached, these ones come off with the stalk. I have tried leaving them outside for a few weeks, and also bringing them inside but they just stay green.

I have also tried giving some potash, but with no change.

It is now spring and temperatures are in the high teens and low 20s.

Apart from the fruit drop, it seems fairly healthy.

Does anyone have any ideas why it might be dropping it's fruit before maturity?

Justin, I think it's just a delayed reaction to the cold mate. I had a 2.5m Babaco loaded all the way up the stem and lost every last piece of fruit it had. Other Babaco's further up the hill out of the colder zone are still powering on with no fruit loss whatsoever.
They will ripen off the tree. Just put them somewhere where you might pass on a reasonable basis and you will see them start to eventually ripen.
I've found that even the smaller one's that have fallen off prematurely taste the same as the larger one's that ripen on the tree.

John Mc is absolutely correct! Even here near Perth I lost a few of the smaller fruit & flowers this winter & thats without frost! In Vic. I had gaps in fruit formation stems all the way up the older tree trunks which signified the winter seasons. Dont worry Justin, you will be eating babaco fruit this season about middle of summer thru autumn!
