Best Guava? (forum)

I'm on the north coast NSW and was thinking of putting in an Abiu, but now am thinking that a a guava might suit here better. I'd appreciate any input re. best tasting variety that would grow well here.

I grew up eating a yellow skinned pink flesh variety about golf ball size and i loved them, grubs always seemed to be an issue though

Grant there are only a few varieties of the tropical guava in Australia and if you prefer the pink fleshed named types the choice is pretty thin.I would try hong kong pink which is like a big improved version of the feral type your talking about. You could lash out and get a pale fleshed mexican cream as they are pretty good. You'd be lucky to get an abiu that is productive in NSW as they are equatorial.I understand seedling are more cold tolerant and are deciduous down there.

Hi Mike, well im here to prove you wrong, my Abiu's (both seedlings ) are both doing fine ,no deciduous leaves, not even a hint of browning of the leaf edges, mind you they havnt fruited yet, but im patient. This year the grafted Mabolo (manilla red ),is flowering like crazy. Dont know if it was the dry november,or not,not complaining though love them.

David, I think Brisbane is ok for abius at a stretch, it is NSW that might provide a challenge.Few equatorials can thrive in the sub-tropics.Is it a Z4 seedling?
About pink guavas, anything with hawaii in the name is also pretty good.I personally am underwhelmed by the Indian types.

Hi Mike , not sure but it had a beautiful taste ,just bought on the side of the road on the sunshine coast years ago. With regard to the mangosteen thread here it was a great loss to loose all those trees and the genetic pool. Isnt it funny how you can get emotional on hearing something like you experienced with those old fruit trees.

Hi guys, i ended up at tropical fruit world in murwillumbah (northern NSW) and their abiu's are going great so i ended up getting a small seedling off them. Lennox is only about 60km from there and is on the coast so the guys there reckon it should do just as well here.

Perhaps i can squeeze a guava in somewhere else

I have an abiu on the tweed that seems to survive the winter without dropping leaves. Although it does go a light lime green colour.
It is really powering right now.
Its protected from the south and east winds and is in full sun. However it is open the the Westerlies we get up here on a hill. So I planted a few peach, White sapote and some sapodilla to protect it from that damaging wind from the west.
