I'm looking at planting a privacy hedge. I live east of Brisbane. Can anyone tell me what the fastest growing plant is for hedging?

One of the fastest and nicest (but not edible) would be the Photinia, nice red young foliage. You might even like the Marraya, nice scented flowers.
Edible wise you you might look out for the Fejoa or Luma Paniculata, not the fasting growing but personally, I wouldn`t waste any space on non edible or none producing plants.

A fast-growing edible privacy hedge?
Bamboo!
Choose your species wisely and go for a clumping, non-invasive type that is renowned for its delicious shoots.
There are quite a few nurseries in Queensland that have a wide selection.

But a good reason to select Photinia is for its fire retarding ability. A fire chief told a friend who had had a fire go through her property that if she had photinia planted it would have slowed the fire down considerably.

That's good to know Deborah. I'll keep it in mind.
My son recently planted a row of Pittosporum 'Screenmaster', which look nice and are growing well. It helps to move them along if you feed them for the first year or two, and water of course.
