Has anyone manged to buy anything from Birdwood Nursery direct recently? They seem to be the source of hard to get plants but appear to want to deal only with other retailers.

They only ever sell direct one time per year - at the QLD Garden Expo at Nambour in July. They have a large stall every year and take some of their hard to find plants, but not that many. Most is what you can order through a good Bunnings - just a few $ cheaper.

One advantage to get it straight from them is their focus on a good nursery hygiene, such as pots off the ground. What you buy should be free of any serious soil born diseases.

I have been wondering about that for awhile too Jason...I have picked up a few of their trees around the traps over here...Most Nurseries carry a catalogue (that they hide somewhere in their office and only 'if' they actually order from them) and u can check our their list of what they sell.
The guys at our local Bunnings are quite good at letting me order some stuff - provided the nursery is one of their suppliers.
I have been very happy with the quality of their plants too.

No, Jason, I do not get them straight from Birdwood.
With Bunnings I never was able to order anything what they would not get in anyway. Not even interstate from Bunnings to Bunnings. Last time, I asked if they can get Paxton Prolific custard apples from the Bunnings on the east coast to WA - no luck, they just would not do it. Maybe the one in Geraldton is better.

Birdwood seem to be one of the main suppliers of some fruit lines to Bunnings in Cairns.Earlier this week I bought a Columbian Red Supreme Dragonfruit there with the birdwood tag on it and noticed some of the custard apples also had birdwood tags.

Nope - my Bunnings will only get what's on their list too Peter :-( If they get enough requests for something - they will go looking for a (WA) supplier tho...I guess I am lucky in that I live regional and have got to know all the guys in my Bunno's nursery - and they know me :) So sometimes I jag some good service.
The head dude even got the supplier to grow us up the heirloom tomatoe seedlings much earlier this year (as we can grow all year round) I haven't seen Birdwood in our Bunno's tho - they have been from other nurseries in Perth.
One of our big private nurseries collects all our fruit/nut tree orders (from their varied list) and brings the plants over, once a year, from over east...so it's not impossible. She advertises in the local paper when she is about to do this.
Maybe some nurseries in Perth/elsewhere can do this too? They can order from the wholesalers. I am wondering if they have to order a 'minimum' amount from them tho...?
