B-Type Avocado

Can anyone recommend a suitable B-type avocado to go with my A-type Hass avocado. I live in a frost-free sub-tropical/warm temperate climate in Wollongong.

Have a great day :)

HappyEarth, I have been trying to find out exactly the same thing. Obviously the B-type needs to flower at the same time as Hass. The Yates Gardening Guide suggests Sharwill to go with Hass.

B type avocados are
Sheppard
Fuerte
Sharwill

These flower at the same time as the Hass but the fruits take different lengths of time to mature so not only do you increase your crop with cross pollination but you also extend you fruiting season.

Kath, in your opinion are any of these three b-cultivars superior? (I am in Sydney.)

They are all very yummy, creaming fleshed avocados. The fuerte possibly pips the post in terms of popularity but it can be a biannual bearer meaning it will produce a heavy crop every second year and a lighter crop in between. It does best with pollination, occasionally when grown in isolation it can produce the tiny coctail avocados which are seedless.

I have an A-type Hass and not enough room for a B-type. Is it necessary to plant a B-type? I'd be grateful for any recommendations on this.
cheers

No, A type avocados tend to set better on their own than the B type, so if you have the room for only one tree choose an A group variety.

thanks Kath. i planted the A-type last months, so I'm glad i don't need to plant another B-type as well. i was concerned it wouldn't produce fruit but am glad to hear that that is not the case. much appreciated,
michael
