Cherry plum, why not? (forum)

I've been a long time fan of the naturalised cherry plum "Prunus cerasifera", I've been eating them since I was a tiny little kid and have been the last few years making a small effort to find the better trees and collect them.

They are to me just as good eating as most plums but the tree has quite a few advantages over normal plums. Firstly they are a tree that's never been breed or "improved" so it grows quite well in poor soil without any extra water or fertiliser, crops VERY heavily, more than any other plum and the Yellow ones like with most yellow fruit are more invisible to birds than red or green fruit.

Right now is the time of year they are ripe so I've been eating a lot of them from trees that are growing on the roadside and decided that in these times of weird climate and general disease trouble with most other Prunus species I better start a thread on this tree since not many people seem to be deliberately growing them. I'm interested in finding out what their range is too since I only know for sure that they grow well and self seed in Southern Victoria

Brad I know back in the day they were planted deliberately, I live in a old town and they haven't been chopped down already there are Cherry plums in most backyards. I rented a house a while ago that had three of them in the backyard and a few really good seedling peaches.

I can't decide if I like the more acid red ones or the much sweeter larger yellow fruit the most. The kind with the red leaves and dark red fruit are pretty good too. I'm pretty sure I've seen some with green fruit at some point in time but haven't for a while so I might have imagined it :)

The trees around here pretty much become the colour of the fruit and carry so much fruit the branches bend down every year without fail, very impressive compared to domesticated plums
