Kath starts with ... I have a lovely little orchard-20 varieties of fruit trees including citrus, stone fruits, bananas, tamarillo, avocado plus lots of vegies-a challenge on our rubbishy sandy soil!. I was just wondering if anyone around Perth has coconuts growing-I know I probably wouldn't get any to eat but love the tropical look. Anyone had luck with them & if so do you have any idea where I could get hold of a shot nut? Back in Darwin you couldn't give them away we had so many but not quite the same here! Kath says... Thanks John, but Carnarvon is a bit too big a drive this week! I was at TASS 1 on Sunday but only thought of the coconuts when I got home. I was wanting to know if they actually grow in Perth or if it would be a waste of time/money. Does anybody here grow them or have seen them growing here? Rahaidi says... Hi Kath, I have had the opportunity in growing some golden Malayan dwarf coconuts in ground and in grow bags in Perth/Mindaries. I must say that out of the 5 x 25L, only one has survived and it does not look good. Our weather here in Perth does not allow it to flourish anywhere near what its surposed to. The winter/wet rains does not help at all. It requires extra special care and even then you're lucky if it survives at all. The leaves brown off during this time and picks up again in Summer where it does best. I have seen one that has been growing in someones front yard in Sorrento, but even that does not look good at all. I bought mine over in Port Headland and got them tranferred down to Perth. You might want to give one of the Palm nurseries a call and try your luck there. To get the same tropical look without the coconuts just plant out a grove of Kentia Palms. Just let them sun-harden for a year or two and they'll go off. They like it here. Good luck Rahaidi

Rick says... According to the book The Coconut Odyssey http://www.aciar.gov.au/system/files/sites/aciar/files/node/453/mono101.pdf coconut trees grow down as far as Geraldton. So the answer would appear to be not quite.

If some one want to grow them , the best way is to divert the water that you user to take to shower or washing to the tree. Some one is selling the dwarf coconut in Gumtree and it is 85.50. http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-perth/dwarf+coconut+tree+for+sale/k0l3008303 Hope this helps. | About the Author Manivelan Gosnells 2nd January 2017 6:31pm #UserID: 15301 Posts: 1 View All Manivelan's Edible Fruit Trees |
