Coffee K7 Die-back

    4 responses

Hi,

I have 2 x Coffee K7 that I bought from Daleys last year. They have been doing really well and put on a lot of growth during the warmer months. They were doing ok up until a couple of weeks ago when we had some severe frosts. I've since moved them under cover but I think the damage has been done.

I've looked on some forums (mainly in the U.S.) but they say the coffee plant is moderately tolerant to frost. Hence why I'm posting here? Could it be something else?

I've added some pics for you to look at. Please advise if you think it might be anything else. We have had a lot of rain lately also...could it be this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Hi Zac, I've got exactly the same problem with my 2 two or so year old dwarf catui coffee trees from Daleys! It only began to appear about a year ago, and pruning certainly doesn't stop it spreading down the branches unfortunately. All I know is that that definitely isn't frost or cold damage.

Thanks for your comments Nick. Bummer though. I love my coffee plants and they put on soooo much growth over the summer months. I just hope they survive the next month or so. I'm wondering if it's too much moisture?... I'll have to do some more research.

Simply too cold for them.
They love temporate to subtropical rain forest where they grow as understories.
I would repot those and mulch heavily with leaf mulch. Take them indoors and place at a northern window.
Keep them rain forest floor damp. Think what lantana likes, Thats what K7 also likes. I dont know who told Daileys that coffee or K7 is frost tolerant? It hates it! Im starting to harvest mine now and they are all in the forrest like weeds. They never stray into the open but like to sit on the edge catching glimpses of sun through the giant mangoes.
Good Luck
