I have not started growing anything yet - would like a fig, quince, and mulberry. What issues will I have getting them started and keeping them alive and producing. Trentham is 720 Mts and snow and frosts are not out of the question.
Thanks John

John best to plant bare rooted in winter, ie very soon. However potted plants from later in spring say October can also be OK. Prepare a nice big hole with good soil or compost in it. Get them off to a good start. All should grow well for you and are comparatively low maintenance. Birds are the main problem with mulberies and figs. There are many mulberry types - probably the black mulberry is the best for cooler areas although red mulberry (eg Hick's fancy) are also OK. They can all grow pretty big so leave some space between them. I would leave 3m at least.

medlar, pears, hazels, chestnuts, so many types of berries - gooseberry, cranberry, blueberry, dewberry, currants and so on

once youve exhausted the dalys temperate, nut and vine lists then you can go looking for other strange things

like goumi, maypops, amelanchier, chinese haw and akebia

frost and snow are little impedimnet if it also gives relief from another limiting factor in this country - heat
