Critters (forum)

I was wondering if anybody could identify what critter is eating my tomatoes during nightime. They eat only the youngest toms at the top of the plant and leave the more mature toms alone. Also, they usually eat and leave several half-eaten tomotoes (most probably this is what's left after they have eaten their fill). There is no tell-tale signs of flying foxes, and all research information regarding possums behaviour suggests that they only eat the ripest of fruits.
I have stayed awake in shifts from sunset to daybreak, but cannot get a glimpse of them. Leaving bright spotlights on appears to work, but I am not too sure if this is totally correct as I haven't tested this theory all that much; anyway the cost of doing this negates the exercise of growing veg's due to the costs. However, this information may help in identifying what they are.
Thanks in advance.

Possibly earwigs? Try leaving out some rolled up sheets of damp newspaper. In the morning, inspect the paper to see if any earwigs have crawled inside to shelter.

These critters are consuming large quantities of fruit in an evening; the half-eatened fruit has bite marks of a small animal and I don't think that earwigs could do this. Still at a loss to what they are...

Yes, or even rats? We occasionally get plagues of rats that eat our fruit. Try putting out rat bait (where pets can't get at it)
