Cross pollination (forum)

M Nash starts with ...
Can I mix heirloom watermelon, Zucchini, Squash and pumpkin in the same area without problems if I want to keep the seeds?

I can spread/split into two groups about 100 metres apart I also have another watermelon "Kolb's Gem that I would like to start but,, again I can only get them 100m apart from the Orangeglo.
I am only really worried about the watermelons, Pumpkins and Squash.
I sow up my own organza bags for my fruit trees so you idea of keeping one or two hand pollinated and pure could be done.

Great table, basically those in the same family pepo, maxima, etc will cross if the bees cross them. So you might need to mark and hand pollinate and exclude (at first light) if you have two of the same family. I.e. just hand pollinate those you are saving for seed, eat the rest :)

100 metres is probably ok, I cant remember if its the reccomended distance, but it depends a bit on what's in between, and if bees are going to be able to fly directly between the two patches to work the flowers... it may be unlikely??? Also early and late flowering vars of the same spp may not be able to cross if the flowering doesn't overlap. Bagging and hand pollinating is the only sure way, to prevent crossing, you have to bag both the M and F flowers you want to use.
