Dwarf Mulberry Tree planted near septic

    3 responses

Hi - I have a dwarf black mulberry tree that I planted in the ground about 2 metres away (uphill) from a concrete septic tank and pvc water pipes.
Everyone keeps telling me I will need to remove it because the roots will damage the pipes - is this true?
I am very happy with the tree because it is growing really well and is fruiting. I have had it for a year now and it was nearly 2metres high but I pruned it to just over a metre high recently. It has fruit on it right now that tastes delicious!
If I have to move it - will it grow ok in a big pot?

Will just add that I also contacted Kendall Farms and just heard back from them and they said not to worry about it at all. I'm liking that because I really love the tree where it is!

Hi Donnadid,
I have a normal size mulberry tree (not a dwaft), and I know it has a VERY invasive root system.
The roots normally won't bother the concrete septic tank, but could interfere with the PVC pipes.
The one thing you should try to do is stop the roots getting into the septics 'transpiration / absorption trench' if possible. If they find that, you'll be in the 'poo', if you get my drift. (pardon the terrible pun).

Just thinking, some older type septic tanks had no concrete bottom on them. If you have one of these, you'll end up with problems as the roots invade the tank from underneath.
Do you know which type of tank you have?

Hi Brendan - yeah we used to have a HUGE one at an old house but this one is a dwarf and the house is new - complete concrete tank connected to town system. Kendall Farms who grow dwarf trees as well said just to keep it pruned and not worry about it.
