That's quite common. They seem to be a bit hit or miss - either the plant is a total fail or a great cropper. Either way they don't live long. My 2 year old seedling Norfolk Black did well this summer.
Just plant more in a different spot - they like it warm, and prune back heavily for winter. Possums can be a problem.

Sounds like fusarium wilt. No real cure. Use grafted passionfruits, the rootstock is very resistant.
I'd never seen it in Melbourne before this year, and never bothered with the grafted varieties, just moved and had it take one out at the new place.

In climates with frosts you may have to use a grafted variety, otherwise the plant won't survive a cold spell . But having grown purple and black passionfruit in Sydney and Perth I haven't seen any advantage of grafted. One grafted Nelly Kelly I grew in Perth sandy soil got sick and its roots were riddled with nematodes. The grafted varieties I grew in Sydney didn't last long either. Grafted varieties send up suckers all over the place from the root stock - I think they're not a good idea at all if you're in a warmish climate.
But if you do go for grafted make sure the rootstock variety is resistant to fusarium wilt and nematodes. See http://era.daf.qld.gov.au/id/eprint/2093/1/PassionfruitGrowingGuide_2011_Rigden_StateOfQueensland.pdf page 36.
