espalier (forum)

I want to espalier some stone fruit around my rainwater tank here in Brisbane, so looking for plants suitable for sub-tropical growing.
I've just been reading up on the multi planting information someone posted, which was really interesting: http://davewilson.com/homegrown/BOC_explained.html
Also read the Woodbridge espalier info page, also interesting:

So, I'm thinking of multiplanting some stone fruit. I'm hoping to choose plants which will extend the fruiting period but does create a problem with trees needing a "buddy" to pollinate? If they fruit at different times then they will flower at different times.
Do I have a choice here?

Brisbane is generally too hot for most stone fruits. But there are some low chill varieties that will work, i.e. tropical peach and nectarine. The brain trust here will be able to tell you more.
You'd probably do better with Tropical apples such as Anna and Golden Dorsett or citrus, which can all be in an espalier.
Do also factor in fruit flies, i.e. netting requirements when you do plant. Good luck.

Lots of stone fruits are fine. Depends on which you prefer - plums, peaches or nectarines - there are at least 3-4 varieites of each that are easy to get. The floridian 'florda...' 'tropic...' and 'gulf...' ranges are fine as are many of the flat peaches. Just watch out for fruit flies and even worse is the Oriental fruit Moth, which turns plants into a mess then sting the fruit to boot!

I've also been warned that the rainwater tank will radiate heat which isn't something you want with a plant wanting a certain number of hours of chill to fruit. I will have to think carefully about the planting. What about the Achacharui? I've never seen one growing...would they be suitable to keep controlled and stunted on an espalier without uprooting the brickwork nearby? They're tropical and might appreciate the heat from the tank. I have two seedlings.
I already have a fruit fly problem with the Carombola nearby. Trying Wild May and there is definatly less of an issue with the current crop compared to the last one.
