Feijoa - varieties (forum)

I live in Sydney's inner west and am considering planting 3 or 4 feijoas as a hedge along our back wall. I gather it's wise to use at least two varieties but am having trouble working out which varieties will be best. I would prefer more compact shrub from rather than tree. Any advice?

Mammoth and Triumph are probably your best bets for good sized fruit - Triumph actually needs Mammoth as a pollinator. All feijoas need heavy pruning or you will end up with long bare branches which only fruit at the tips, so are ideal for keeping compact, even hedge them.

I just bought a Feijoa from a nursery and planted in a large raised bed.

It did not have a variety on it - the label just indicated Pineapple Guava on the reverse with Feijoa written on the front. There was no variety named or is this a variety in itself?

Does anyone know if they are fast growing?

I bought 3 "no named" feijoas from the markets 5 years ago and they are finally flowering for the first time now, after a long wait. I was going to pull them out to replace them with some grafted ones so actually went out a month ago and bought 2 named varieties, mammoth and triump, and they have both flowered within a month of buying them. Hopefully you have better luck with yours.

To Anonymous : Yes ,I puzzled about that label from before 1996, when I planted it, until about 2001 approx.
Well, I finally figured it out.
It is just a feijoa seedling.
It maybe is slow to bear flowers and fruit.
But the fruit is just as good as the cutting/grafted feijoas, but maybe not always,as seedlings might vary.
But chances are that all feijoa seedlings are good fruit, because I planted only 1 seedling and it has good fruit.
And big fruit too,so maybe all feijoa seedlings are the Mammoth variety?
