WogGarden1 starts with ... Hello, Over the last 2 - 3 weeks I've gotten growth from the bottom of my brown Turkey Fig tree. I'm not sure what to do, cut them or keep it? Tree is young, it's been in the ground for 8 months. I did prune it when dormant and removed few shoots from the bottom, which I think it's them that could be regrowing. Overall health of the tree is great, big leafs, new growth and the fruit it did start to produce (2), fell off. Thanks in advance. Steve

mic1 says... Hi Steve, Cut them or keep them, the choice is yours, depending on what type of growth habit you want. I remove them on mine because I want a tree with a single main trunk. With a single trunk, it's easier to stop the ants when they come after the fruit. mic1 says... What Mike Tr advises is true especially for plants grafted on to a root stock. Figs are generally grown on their own roots so it is not as important for them. You will want to remove the sucker as complete as possible, as close as possible to where it branches from. Otherwise it will likely sprout again. You can cut it off, or if it is coming from under the soil, you can get your fingers in there and snap it off. If you're lucky you'll get it with a few small roots attached, and then will grow easily into a new plant.
