Fruit trees (forum)

Patricia Simpson starts with ...
I have just asked for the Mulberry tree and want to know how long it is before the tree fruits. I also wish to grow another miniture fruit tree which I have yet to decide. Can you tell me the best ones to select for fruiting and also what is the maximum and minimum size of the container. Thanks for your help

I would think that buying a mulberry tree this time of year would get you a tree with a few fruits on it. If not now then within a couple of months. They fruit in early spring. So assuming you give it good soil and water this summer it should grow considderably and give you a bumper crop next spring.

My tree is a Drawf Red Shahtoot. It is on dwarf rootstock. I have had it for 4 years. I prune it heavily to keep it under 2.5m tall. But this has to be done leaving lots of twiggy bits to get fruit each year. It is coming out of winter dormancey now and the first fruits and leaves are opening.

Your tree should grow non stop until autumn. If you treat your tree well over the next year by giving good soil, water and lots of mulch, it will grow fast and be much much bigger by autumn. Next year it should give you more mulberries than you will eat.
