Rev says... Yes do try again Ginger takes a while before it wakes up, but have grown it in WA before You need a good soil. gnger is a hungry crop Plenty of Calcium, Magnesium, phosphate and well rotted organic matter. Moderate nitrogen poor soil makes small rhizomes. and ecah year they get smaller and smaller. i suspect a well aged compost based on chicken litter and leaves, with some dolomite and charcoal added would be good for ginger best soil ever for growng ginger was red basalt derived soils near Millaa millaa in nth qld. just added mulch and dolimte and a pinch of NPK, and each knob turned into kilo ++ clusters in my absence. amazing. You can help force a young plant by planting in a pot and putting pot in a shoppng bag igloo, for extra heat and humdity They wake up late, like Turmeric, because ( i suspect) the tropical wet doesnt relly get going till december and goes till april Basically 3 months out from your wet season, almost opposite Itll like a sheleterd spot with summer irrigaton but its probably worth it Ginger jumped from being 8.99-16.99 one year here (2008), and the foloowing year its 16.99-25/kg? WT? should have bought ginger futures! looks fishy to me.. like supermarket middleman fiddling.. also good because you can try young ginger when its still pink - you cant buy that freshness and alsu use the foliage Try steaming a whole chook stuffed with ginger stem and basted in light soy. good :) | About the Author Rev North Qld 28th August 2010 5:36pm #UserID: 1806 Posts: 359 View All Rev 's Edible Fruit Trees |
