Liz starts with ... Hi - does anyone know where Goldfinger banana plants can be bought in Perth, or does anyone in Perth have any suckers they'd be willing to sell? The Ag Dept says they will grow better in Perth than Cavendish (the main commercial variety) - Goldfinger is apparently much more cold-tolerant, and will grow in temperatures down to ~8 deg C (compared to ~15 deg C for most banana varieties) ...but I can't find them anywhere!!!! (...and banana plants are prohibited imports into WA from any other state, so I can't order them from elsewhere.) Cheers... :-) | About the Author Liz Perth 3rd May 2009 12:36am #UserID: 1639 Posts: 36 View All Liz's Edible Fruit Trees |
trikus says... I am sure you could get one from the Qld DPI . as they are shipped sterile in a test tube . Or else ask a local hursery to order in some . They could get them from our local supplier , the link has been put up here several times , but I love plugging a local business.... Maybe they can get accredited to ship to WA , maybe they already are , write or ring Rod Randall and ask . He is the Gov. officer in charge of the very restrictive regulations protecting WA . http://www.backyardbananas.com.au/faq.html Goldfinger is a pretty good cultivar as is the close relative Mona Lisa , they were developed by the banana research facility in Honduras after many years of painstaking work . | About the Author Trikus Tully 3rd May 2009 10:41am #UserID: 930 Posts: 749 View All Trikus's Edible Fruit Trees |

Deb says... The Goldfinger banana variety was under investigation and limited commercial supply in NSW Coofs Harbour and Southern Qld and the then Hort Research & Advisory Station Gosford (Aust Dept Ag) characterised it's post harvest. Their Dr Newman may know more about availability and suitability for WA- Ph 02 4348 1900. | About the Author Deb5 Sydney 20th July 2009 2:23pm #UserID: 2567 Posts: 1 View All Deb5's Edible Fruit Trees |
