grapevine going to seed early (forum)

Oreah starts with ...
Discovered this morn that the three baby bunches of grapes on my 1 year old vine are going to seed. A neighbour's old and prolific vine is also doing the same and in fact has never had its bunches of grapes mature; at present they look like wattle. My neighbour's and my vines do not get the afternoon sun. Would this be the problem?

What do you mean by going to seed? First the vines have to flower (which is what most vines are doing at this time of the year)then they develop fruit which ripens and eventually shrivels if not picked(by you or the birds).I suppose you could say that grape blossom looks a bit like wattle only greener. There are ornamental grape vines which flower but never set fruit, perhaps that is what your neighbour has.Is yours a cutting of his or did you buy it as a grapevine?Fruit would probably be sweeter with afternoon sun but it should still fruit. If it is such a young vine make sure you give it enough water and feeding to support three bunches of grapes,in fact probably you should cut at least two of them off to let the vine grow a bit more.Lots of luck.
