growing fruit trees in shade?

    10 responses

Anna starts with ...
Hi all, Can anyone recommend which dwarf fruit trees might be worth growing? I live in Sydney and have a small yard that is quite shady.
I have some potted citrus that bears fruit occasionally, plus a fig tree.

I would like to try growing dwarf black mulberry but am having trouble finding one to buy.

Thanks in advance,

Anna

Hi Anna,

Dwarf pink lady apple trees are great as well as peach and nectarine. All can be grown in pots too.

So far so good for me!

They're not dwarf, but Solanum fruits do well in shaded positions. I've got tamarillo, naranjilla, casana and cocona growing in the shadow of a photinia tree.

Hi Firefly, do you get frosts there? I've got a casana and am keen to plant it out (have tree shelter) but worried about frosts, we get some mild ones.

Jantina, the tamarillo and naranjilla have both been in the ground two years and have done OK with no extraordinary measures on my part.

I'd get a few nasty freezing nights every winter, but nothing too persistent.

They're sheltered by my neighbour's hugely overhanging photinia, about three metres away from them and to their north. They have been pruned back by the cold, but it hasn't killed them yet.

Since they fruit from the new growth anyway, I think it helps keep them a manageable size.

I would suggest growing the Casana in a large tub so it cna be brought indoors in the winter. By the way, I am after Casana and naranjilla seeds - would anyone on this formum be able to sell me some?

To Firefly,

Would it be possible to buy some Casana Naranjilla and Cocona seeds from you when they fruit? Do you have any problem with Nematodes effecting these fruit?

Hi John, I have millions of naranjilla seed in fruit lying all over the ground. I see that there are very tough restrictions on sending plant material the WA.
I've been looking for casana and Cocona for some time, They're not easily obtainable.

I have some Cocona seeds. They should still be viable having been extracted 3 months ago from a fruit. Email me at

iamfruitist-at-gmail-dot-com. Don't think I will send seeds to WA.
