Hass in Mid Murray Riverland SA (forum)

We want HASS Avocado on our property.

We live out in the dry sandy loam (mostly sand and occasional chalk rich layers) of the Mid Murray council in SA. Yes the soil is poor, but it need not stay that way and advice on what HASS might like would be appreciated. Secondarily, I know that out here we get some serious heat in the summer (35C for weeks, with the occasional bump to 40 to 42) and I wonder how well HASS will deal with this as there are comments about HASS and heat stress.

Also our bore water is a bit saline. Not enough to make stock unhappy, or to keep established plants from doing fine (of course you lose some harvest potential). Knowledge of how HASS responds to that would be good. Our peaches, chooks & veggie garden do fine with it, though tender plants are started with rain water.

Avocados are usually grafted onto rootstock seedlings. Several types are commonly used. These vary in how well they do in soil types. Some are beter suited to lime + salt soils etc. As Hass is commonly grown in the Riverland SA and Sunraysia Vic, 35C for weeks, with the occasional bump to 40 to 42) shouldnt be a big problem if you irrigate.
