Hawaiian Guava

My Hawaiian Guava, I planted it winter last year and it struggled in the cold and frost, but as you can see it has become a beautiful specimen and in the start of this years winter it still has fruit, strange! the fruit has not ripen yet it could take another two months before they come good, can't wait to taste them.

Amazing growth rate for such a young tree, good to see that it is producing already as well.

Just be aware that the winter fruits do taste not as good, so better judge the taste by fruit produced late summer/early autumn.

Hi, Im interested in growing larger guava (not cherry guava) that fruit in winter to avoid fruit fly issues. Can anyone recommend the best variety for winter fruiting in Brisbane? I note a mention here of winter fruits not tasting good, however articles on Dr Google often cite wet season fruit having the poorer taste. Any comments? Thanks in advance!

I would certainly recommend adding a Brazillian Guava to the mix , nice flavour and the massive bonus that fruit flies don’t touch them

Hi Grant, thanks for your advice. When you say Brazilian guava, do you mean Eugenia dombeya or another species? Seems to be some confusion about naming. I have grumichama which seems to be E. brasiliensis.

Thanks again Grant. Perhaps Daleys has a good selection. That species has very mixed reviews and similar to cherry guavas many reviews state it isnt very edible and is a big risk of becoming a naturalised weed.
