heat stress in pumpkins (forum)

I am experiencing a lot more heat stress in my butternut patch than last season. The plants dangle their leaves just about all day till evening & some of the baby fruit simply dont make it!
I grew spuds during the winter in this patch & wondered if it was connected? Have dolomited ,B&Bd, & chook pelleted before planting out the pumpkins early Sept. They were fine & spreading fast until now. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Seems the West is in for another hot summer - I think it is purely water stress with curcurbits. Maybe early morning watering or soak them the night before you expect high temperatures. They don't really handle intense sun if the ground isn't damp.

Hi snottie - how bad are they? (hopefully not like Phils pic - eek!!) I wouldn't have thought it would be too hot yet - I am wondering if it's worth digging down to some roots and checking them out also?
Apart from water, as Phil said, I can't think why they would be doing that unless they have root disease maybe?
I would normally have melons and pumpkins now (and it's a bit hotter up here) only problem I had was the pumpkins got sunburnt....grrr.

Looks great snottiegobble! that should do the trick and just in time for next weeks scorching weather :(
The front is only a few kms away now - Carnarvon has had almost 200mm already - so lucky! That would soak in just nicely on my sand dune! (and my rain water tanks are empty too!)
