I want to grow Malabar Chestnut in Sydney area. Is it possible? I have heard that this tree can not stand low temperatures. We get sometimes zero degrees in my area.
Not every year but sometimes only.
Will Malabar Chestnut tree grow and produce fruit/nuts in my area?
Please share your experience and let me know.
I ate those beautiful nuts in French Polynesia and I want to grow them here in Australia.
I would like to receive any information and advice regarding this matter.
Waiting for replies.

Hi johncobb

Yes its possible to grow Malabar chesnut in Sydney provided you situate it in the sunniest spot in your garden and possibly near a brick or concrete structure for added warmth. They can take temperature down to -2C only for a brief period of time.

One excellent technique frequently employed by skilled gardeners is to plant the frost tender specimen into a black pot for a few years. The reason being you can easily shelter your plant during forcasted frosty nights until they become big, strong enough and fully acclimatized to your local climate then you can plant them to their final destination maybe after a few years in a container. Thats what i did to my frost tender plants. last winter i lined them up against my front houses' brick wall receiving the morning sun until noon. No casualties whatsoever. Now they are already powering up ready to face the next winter season. This time they are more prepared. Here it can get down to -4C and always between -2 and 0 on most days during the cold season.

So yeah give it a go.

Happy Gardening :-)

Im pretty sure i've seen them selling at Bunnings in Sydney. To me that would indicate that we can grow them here!

I dont think Sydney's weather gets that bad to kill plants! Unless your in blue mountains. Most sububan sydney should be fine.

Based on Daley's description "e;The plant will tolerate brief exposure to low temperatures but won't tolerate frost."e;

Best bet is to put it in a pot or next to sun facing brick wall. Or somewhere you can cover it on really cold nights.
