wood88 starts with ... Hi, I have had this Jujube plant for a couple of years now, initially it was in a pot and last winter I moved it into the ground. Every year it has flowered but fruit has never set 😩 Can anyone help for suggestions on how to make the fruit set, as well as which varieties this may be? Thank you wood88

Fruitylicious1 says... Hi wood88 Your jujube tree looks healthy from the images you have provided. So there's no is issue with water and nutrients. The main pollinators of jujube are honey bees, ants and flies, 80% of pollinating is being done by the bees. If there's no bees try planting bee magnet flowering plants to attract the main pollinators. Try also planting another jujube variety for cross pollination. You can also try hand pollinating it by using a small brush or cotton buds by brushing or dabbing from flower to flower to aid the pollination process and hopefully fruits will set. Another point that should be taken is the luck of the draw. That is your were dealt with a dud jujube because of genetic anomaly. I have read that some jujube just won't set fruit no matter what. I hope that's not the case with your tree. Anyhow if all fails try girdling it to shock it to flower and fruit. I have 3 years old seedling solitary jujube that flowered and fruited heavily on its second year without any special treatment from me. With regards to the variety of your jujube, the seller or the donor should have mentioned it to you unless it's seedling grown from an unknown variety. If not you will have to wait for it to fruit and hopefully you can compare the image to most published known jujube varieties. wood88 says... Hi Farouk & Fruitylicious1, I just bought the plant as a small seedling, possibly from a sucker??? When I bought it I didn't know there where so many varieties as I was buying it as a suprise for my wife. I will try and hand polinate it, to try and get some fruit. Hopefully I don't have a dud jujube 😢 Thanks for your help. | About the Author wood88 Perth 7th January 2020 3:05pm #UserID: 21428 Posts: 4 View All wood88's Edible Fruit Trees |

Farouk says... Hi Wood, Nice gift! I've been doing some searching to find out how long Jujube is known to take to fruit from seed but unsuccessful. I found this from Daleys forum here, someone had a couple of grafted ones that took 8 years: https://www.daleysfruit.com.au/forum/jujubes2/ | About the Author Farouk SOUTH WENTWORTHVILLE,2145,NSW 8th January 2020 1:17pm #UserID: 8110 Posts: 206 View All Farouk's Edible Fruit Trees |

Fruitylicious1 says... Hi Wood88 There's still another use for your jujube seedling. You can use it as a rootstock for grafting a proven productive jujube variety. You can learn grafting through you tube. It's not hard. Or you can ask someone you know who knows how to graft fruit trees. Sometimes gardening clubs have grafting demos and service and scion exchange mostly during winter time. Good luck and happy gardening 😎 | About the Author Fruitylicious1 TAMWORTH,2340,NSW 8th January 2020 9:23pm #UserID: 16885 Posts: 709 View All Fruitylicious1's Edible Fruit Trees |

wood88 says... Hi Farouk & Fruitylicious1, Thanks again for your replies. Might not be the best gift if it never fruits 😂 Looks like I might be in for a long wait. Might be worth buying another variety and then try grafting parts of that tree on this one once it's strong enough or find someone in Perth that can help me graft a fruiting variety onto this one. I did transplant it from a pot into the ground last winter as it didn't seem to be growing that much in a large pot. Do you think that would effect it much? Also the plant is about 900mm high, not sure how high they need to be before fruiting? If it is a sucker will it ever fruit or only flower or will it just take a longer time to eventually fruit? Thanks again Wood | About the Author wood88 Perth 9th January 2020 11:15pm #UserID: 21428 Posts: 4 View All wood88's Edible Fruit Trees |

Fruitylicious1 says... My jujube likes to be fed during spring about September with any of the following fertiliser; Sudden Impact or Gyganic by Neutrog. It's a mix of composted chook poo and sulphate of potash. Dynamic lifter or rooster booster with sulphate of potash will also suffice. Also sprinkle it with a bit of Epsom salt. During early summer I feed it with osmocote for fruit trees. I never fertilise it during autumn. It likes full sun and regular watering . During winter prune weak, dying or dead branches. That's all I do. Happy gardening 😀 With regards to better fruit set, I read from Sub-tropical fruit tree society of Queensland that applying boron + urea on or before flowering around the problem tree may help with fruit set. Try the recipe next spring. Good luck 😁 | About the Author Fruitylicious1 TAMWORTH,2340,NSW 17th January 2020 8:33pm #UserID: 16885 Posts: 709 View All Fruitylicious1's Edible Fruit Trees |
