hi everyone,
today i saw a lychee tree for sale for the first time and it looked reasonably healthy and i was tempted to buy it but am unsure of whether this tree can be successfully grown &/or bear fruit outside in Melbourne? thanks.

Hi Culebra,

They do bear fruit but too late for the fruits to ripe before winter so they drop.

Thankyou for the information Tran.

It is a shame that the fruit does not ripen here.

Lychee in Melb - I don't see why not? I hear there's not much frost around in Melb' anymore? There are a cupla' varieties that seem to do ok in Perth - Bosworth 3 (Kwai Mai Pink now?) that are more cool tolerant.

Melbourne inner city and inner city suburbs rarely if ever get frosts of any description. supposedly due to the heat island effect.

i'm a little further out, but frosts are no where near as severe as 7 or so years ago. this whole winter my place only received one light frost. friends in other areas report similar conditions.
plenty of dew though but that's okay.
i see increasing amounts of frangipanis and banana tree around.
thanks for the tips on the cold-tolerant varieties of lychee.
