Lychee questions (forum)

Hi everyone,

I have just moved from a small apartment to a suburban block and finding this forum very inspiring for our new garden! Hoping someone can help with two lychee questions:

I have two potential positions for a lychee tree, either very close (approx 1.5m each side) from a mango and a plum, or in a much larger area near pipes. Is either position better than the other? Are lychee roots likely to damage the pipes?

Are lychee fruits susceptible to fruit fly - I have read lots of conflicting information on this!

Thanks in advance for your advice :)

Peter says...
Lychee is considered 'medium risk to non-prefered host' for fruit fly according to the AgDepartment. In general, fruit fly chooses first primary hosts such as guava, but if there is nothing around, then they search for something else less preferable. That's I guess why you have found different conflicting information.

Without I have looked up on the invasiveness of lychee roots, I imagine, that they are classified as non-invasive and shallow, especially if it is a airlayered (marcotted) tree. It's more the tree height and canopy size with limbs breaking who cause structure damage. If it would be my garden, I would choose the larger area with the pipes, but worthwhile to investigate a bit more just to make sure!
