byron starts with ... Looking for anyone whos grown or seen growing or known someone whos grown etc... Malabar Chestnut ( Pachira insignis). I live in The Cjannon, Northern Rivers area of NSW and im interested in how this tree preforms outside of its tropical homelands. Has anyone seen it fruit/eaten it? Very curious to see if its productive enough to warrant planting up a fair few, not for for cash crop but for a good subtrop. perenial staple within a permaculture system aiming toward self sufficiency. Thank you... | About the Author byron here 11th June 2012 3:12pm #UserID: 4588 Posts: 8 View All byron's Edible Fruit Trees |

Linton says... I have found that the Guinea Chestnut seems to be more hardy for growing in Melbourne. It's Pachira aquatica also called Saba Nut. The plant looks identical to Malabar Chesnut which I also tried but didn't go as wwell. The one in the picture is Pachira aquatica growing outside in Melbourne so if they grow down here they should grow even better in NSW.
