Looking for anyone whos grown or seen growing or known someone whos grown etc... Malabar Chestnut ( Pachira insignis). I live in The Cjannon, Northern Rivers area of NSW and im interested in how this tree preforms outside of its tropical homelands. Has anyone seen it fruit/eaten it?
Very curious to see if its productive enough to warrant planting up a fair few, not for for cash crop but for a good subtrop. perenial staple within a permaculture system aiming toward self sufficiency.

Thank you...

Hi byron, I'm growing one here, just an hours drive north of Sydney. It's in it's third year, in the ground, with several flowers last summer/Autumn and one fruit on now about the size of a lemon. It's in a frost free part of the paddock under some tall Eucalypts.

I have found that the Guinea Chestnut seems to be more hardy for growing in Melbourne. It's Pachira aquatica also called Saba Nut. The plant looks identical to Malabar Chesnut which I also tried but didn't go as wwell.

The one in the picture is Pachira aquatica growing outside in Melbourne so if they grow down here they should grow even better in NSW.

Hi, by any chance does any one have some seeds of Malabar Chestnut that I can buy? I would like to grow a braided one by planting few seeds together. Currently I am growing 2 separate ones at home. Thank you
