Mango tree

    11 responses

Stephen starts with ...
I have a mango tree [unfortunately, I just know it is mango tree and no idea what mango type] which I planted some 10 years ago. We harvested some fruits in past years and found the fruits very sweet and lovely texture. Last October/November, tree was full of flowers; later in early December, we did get lots of small fruits. Unfortunately, by mid-Dec, we lost all fruits - first year that we did not get to eat !
Could you please help that we may get to eat in next season.
Thank you.

Hello Stephen
Your tree has anthracnose, a fungal disease, spray weekly with 30grm of Copper Oxichloride and 30grm of Mancozeb mixed together in 9L water making sure you use plenty of wetting agent to make it adhere to the leaves.

Do this say four times now and then start again about a month before the tree flowers. Once the tree flowers cut out the Copper Oxichloride because it will kill the flowers, then add it again after the fruit has set. Do this until the fruit is say 1/3 developed and then every three weeks until you harvest.

I trust you also fertilise the tree to help the fruit set.

Weekly copper sprays will defoliate the tree and produce toxic levels of copper in soil. Mancozeb is sufficient.

Does it defoliate your trees and ,if not, what concentration of copper ?sulphate do you use?. Copper toxicity in soils is well described as is effects on soil worms .

Hi kert,
I use only copperoxy chloride, at 30g to 4½ litres of water.
You are right about Copper Sulphate, THAT can kill a tree, don't use it straight.
Jerry Coleby-Williams has the recipe for Bordeaux spray (copper sulphate +) in the latest ABC Gardening mag.

Sorry Kert

I didn't say anything about copper sulphate, just copper oxychloride like Brenda uses. I use the same volume and would spray 6 to eight times a year. 4 1/2 litres is usually plenty for one mature tree

I find that Mancozeb by itself doesn't do the job here.

An interesting thing happened with Cyclone Ului that we had a month or so back.

We had 140/150 klm/hr winds for about 7 hours and not only did it defoliate many trees but it brought disease with it. Our local Mango trees are suffering badly and because they are now dormant due to winter arriving, it's a bit of a concern.

OK,now I'm with you ,30grams in 9Litres is pretty dilute . Full strength of copper sulphate is 100grams . I doubt it makes much difference to defoliation whether it is the sulphate or oxychloride, just the concentration . Do you have a source that recommends mancozeb with copper sprays or is this heuristic . (yes, yes I know)
