Passion Fruit (forum)

Tamworth's temperatures vary from -5 with heavy frosts in Winter to 40 degrees in Summer. I was thinking of planting a passion fruit vine, either or both Panama - Sweet Gold or Supersweet 96A. Could you please tell me if they will be suitable for my climate. Many thanks, Andrew

Passionfruit don't like frost, and I think about -2c would be their limit. You may have a chance if you grow against a North facing brick/rock wall in a place that's sheltered from cold winds - a bit of a heat sink effect. Panama golds and purples are among the more tropical varieties so best steer clear of them. You'd be better of just experimenting with a few common black seedlings, as these have better cold tolerance. (Banana passionfruit have a good cold tolerance, but your summer heat would kill them.) Regular passionfruits would be ok in the heat as long as you gave them plenty of water. Since you have such extreme temp's, you'd be best not to plant anything now until after the last of your frosts - to have any chance, you would need a well established plant to survive your winter.
