peanut butter tree

I live in Newcastle. My tree looked very healthy when it arrived. I planted it in a large half wine barrel. Was surprised it has lost its leaves at the moment, as it should be evergreen! But Newcastle gets a lot of rain, so it may have been too wet and died :(

They can lose leaves over winter. Mine is budding now. Check the nodes around where the leaves have fallen from to see if there are any signs of life in the next week or so.

Misty_Kat,
Peanut butter tree, Bunchosia argenta, can be bare at this time of the year, depending on how cold it gets. I have one totally devoid of leaves and another, younger plant in a slightly warmer area, in full leaf. How do you know if it's dead or deciduous? just lightly scratch a small piece of bark away. If it's alive you will see a green colouring just under the bark. Again, I wonder if the pots too big for the plant?

Thanks John. I was thinking the same; maybe Newcastle is too cold for it. Although the limbs arn't brittle yet, so there is hope :)

Peanut Butter Trees loving Winter in Melbourne!

I had these Peanut Butter plants under cover on the veranda for the first year when I got them and they never grew at all and stayed at about 20cm, even over Summer.

So they were put outside in the open at the start of Winter this year and they have since tripled in size. Amazed by the growth rate during the cold season and can't understand other comments that they can lose their leaves in colder temperatures as I have never found that to be the case.

Cheers!

Flowered a couple of times, but nothing set. Might have been because I transfered it from a pot into the ground. Does seem to like lots of water.
