Persimmon Tree (forum)

harro starts with ...
I planted a fuyu persimmon with premium potting mix in a half wine barrel last June. Apart from some new growth in spring it has not grown anymore and I have fertized it also water it every day. We are in the foothills of Perth and it sits facing west so is in full sun.
Please can you help also how long do they take to fruit.

Full sun means the pot might run out of water during the day, I water 5 times a day via drippers measured by an irrometer tensiometer.

Check out the persimmons on Carmel Rd, they are 10 years old and only bear fruit after 5 years.

Thanks Jimmy I will up the water. I give it a good soaking every day but I guess being potting mix it may dry out quick especially in this heat. Is it okay in full sun?

Help I have found white ants in my wine barrel not sure how to try and save my persimmon that is growing in it. Anyone have any ideas.

Harro,

Not sure how it is set up but whiteants need to be connected to the ground to survive, if you can slip a sheet of flat tin or something underneath they probably would leave/die. You could also flood them out after jsut to make sure. If you could take a picture we might be able to be more helpful.

Charles I will try and describe it as we shifted it away from the house because of the whie ants.
We thought it might be getting water logged in winter so we put it up on bricks.
Then early summer we put it back on the pavers within a month we found W Ants underneath so we put it up again and sprayed fly spray and seemed tp get rid of them.We don't want to use toxic chemicals on my fruit tree.
Yesterday after Jimmys advise I checked the soil to see if it was dry and found them again. We thought the wine barrels was ideal for fruit trees obviously not.
Now do I repot it but may leave some in the root ball I'm scared I will disturb it and loose it.
By the way we did lift the paver and only found a few so put white ant poison on them. My husband is also puzzled as it doesn't make sense to him.

Hi harro - are the bricks the one's with holes in them? I have had white ants travel up these holes. White ants cannot tolerate any light so they will also make those mud "tubes" to get to what they want.
Use the tin on top of the bricks or get creosote soaked sleeper bits from Bunnings to put in on.
I would be calling the pest control man to do an inspection too!?

I planted an advanced Fuyu last year and read (on the tag I think) to be careful not to disturb the tap root on it. I was really careful when I planted it (cut the pot out/off IN the planting hole) it's doing really well.
